Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was released in the U.S. on August 2, 2019 and directed by David Leitch. A very outrageously stupid movie, however everyone involved knows what it is and in the end made it wildly entertaining.
The story features around Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw. The villain in the film is Brixton, who is trying to retrieve a virus called “snowflake”. He frames Shaw’s sister, Hattie, calling her a traitor who killed her whole team. This then brings together Hobbs and Shaw as they have to save the whole world and Shaw’s sister while making sure that Brixton doesn’t get the “snowflake” virus.
The cast in this film is absolutely phenomenal. It actually shocks me to see just how much star power they brought together for one film. Dwayne Johnson plays Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham plays Deckard Shaw. They are obviously the main characters and they have incredible chemistry with each other. Some of the best scenes in the film were just them arguing with each other back and fourth. Both of them bought into the cheesiness and craziness of the film and delivered great performances. Idris Elba played the villain, Brixton Lore, who is basically superhuman due to his cybernetic implants. He is one of my favorite actors and he gave a very great performance as usual. His character was pretty straightforward, however he was the perfect fit for the role and fit very well alongside Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Finally, Vanessa Kirby plays Hattie Shaw who is Deckard’s sister. Her character has a fairly important role in the film and she also has some funny scenes between the arguing Hobbs and Shaw. In the end, they did an incredible job with assembling the cast for this film.
The first positive of the film is all of the action scenes. There are multiple times in the film where it is just completely chaotic with things flying and going all over the place. While those scenes are very cheesy and unrealistic, they are presented in such a way that it is just a blast to watch. Mostly all of the action was put together very well so they did a good job in that department. As previously mentioned, the chemistry between Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson is also a huge positive. They are the driving forces in the movie and their chemistry is a very crucial element to have. Their conversations were always funny and they both delivered very well. The final positive of the film was the two cameos that I’m pretty sure no one would expect. I had heard that their would be cameos, however when I actually saw them in the movie I was shocked. They did an incredible job in not marketing these two actors as it was a pleasant surprise to see them in the film.
A mixed aspect to the film for me was just how stupid it was. As time has gone on each Fast & Furious film has just gotten bigger and honestly dumber. This movie is definitely no exception to that as it probably has some of the biggest and most insane stunts in the whole franchise. This is not a positive or a negative for me because I felt as if they knew how crazy the scenes were so they just embraced it. They didn’t try to make it too serious which I think helped in the end.
Really the only negative that I had with the film was that they didn’t take a lot of risks with the story. It is a story and plot line that we have seen so many times with two guys who don’t like each other end up teaming up. While it is very entertaining to see, I still wish that they could have tried something new instead of just reusing what we have seen before.
Overall, this is a wildly entertaining film that I think most people should enjoy. It is very cheesy and a lot of the stunts are unbelievable, however if you can just watch the film and have a good time with it then there is no reason that you shouldn’t enjoy it.
Rating- 8 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness.
