Men in Black: International (2019) Movie Review

Men in Black: International was released in the U.S. on June 14, 2019 and directed by F. Gary Gray. While it isn’t that good of a movie, it still does find ways to be entertaining.

The cast in this film is filled with a lot of familiar faces, however none of the acting is extraordinary. The three main characters in the film are Agent H (Chris Hemsworth), Agent M (Tessa Thompson), and Agent High T (Liam Neeson). Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are really the focal point throughout the whole movie and I thought that they had great chemistry. They have worked together before through their characters in the Marvel Universe so that definitely helped. Liam Neeson’s character was also acted very well. A pawny alien in the film was also voiced by Kumail Nanjiani. His character brought the majority of the comedy to the movie and him doing the voice was amazing. Overall, the cast did a pretty good job.

The main thing that I enjoyed about this movie was that it was entertaining. Sure, this isn’t a movie made with a ton of passion, however it is still pure entertainment. I didn’t walk in expecting to watch a masterpiece of a movie, but rather a film that would let me have a good time watching it. Most of the CGI was also done fairly well, minus a few scenes that were a little shaky. There weren’t really any scenes in the movie that I thought looked plain stupid so that is ultimately a plus as some movies have a lot of issues regarding their CGI.

The first fault this movie has is the story. While I was never bored, the story was something that we have seen so many times. I don’t want to spoil what happens, however it is a typical plotline that happens in so many movies. I wish that they could have taken this franchise in a completely different direction. There are so many other cool ideas that they could have chosen to go with, rather than the one we got. At times I also wasn’t very fond of how the movie was directed. I thought that there were a lot of scenes that just kept cutting around too much and honestly at times it made it seem very cheap. Some of the scenes seemed like they were just put together, rather than being crafted with a passion. I wish that we could have seen someone who really wanted to make this a unique movie at the helm.

Overall, I didn’t hate this film as I thought that it was fairly enjoyable. However, by no means is it a well made film and it has a lot of problems throughout. I would recommend this to people who are new to the Men in Black franchise as I don’t think that fans of the original films will like it.

Rating- 6 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness.
