The Hustle (2019) Movie Review

The Hustle was released in the U.S. on May 10, 2019 and directed by Chris Addison. This had a lot of promise due to the two leading actresses, however it was a complete disappointment.

The movie is about two con artists named Penny and Josephine meeting. They start off disliking each other, however ultimately end up working together. They meet a man named Thomas who they want to con, however Penny is very fond of him. The whole film is full of jokes that don’t land and just plain stupid comedy.

The cast in this movie wasn’t awful as they did do a decent job with the roles that they were given. Anne Hathaway played Josephine who was the more sophisticated con artist. I mean… I didn’t really think she was that good, however I guess she did good with her role. Her character annoyed me somewhat, however her performance wasn’t awful. Rebel Wilson played Penny and her character also somewhat annoyed me. Her performance wasn’t awful, but it really wasn’t good either. I very much disliked how these two characters were written and I think that they wasted the abundance of talent between these two women. Alex Sharp played Thomas and yet again, not a great performance. That is basically the story of this movie… it is filled with good actors and actresses, however they all delivered below average performances. It also doesn’t help that the film was so poorly written.

One thing that I enjoyed about this movie was the potential that it had. The premise of the film sounded interesting and they just totally wasted it. This movie could have been so much more, but sadly it wasn’t. The only other thing that I somewhat enjoyed were some of the jokes. Honestly, the large majority of the jokes in this film I did not find funny, but there were a few along the way that I laughed at.

The first thing that I did not like about this film was that it was just so poorly written. They could have made such an awesome story about these two women conning people, however they went in such a stupid route that ruined the movie. The story wasn’t interesting to me at all during… well basically all of it. I was already checking the time about fifteen minutes into the film. I feel like they were very lazy in how the story was written as it just seemed very standard and was filled with things we have seen before. Most of the jokes that they tried in this movie did not work. Yet again another thing that they wasted as Rebel Wilson is very good in comedic roles. Overall, it is a film just filled with stupid decisions and a lot of wasted talent.

The Hustle is definitely not a film that I would recommend. It has so much wasted potential that it is painful to watch.

Rating- 3.5 out of 10 on the scale of awesomeness. A film that I will never watch again and I hope that no one else has to either.
